Why is toilet paper so fluffy and why are tissues so soft?
Put simply, the tissue paper is "compressed" to give it its fluffy, soft feel. But one thing at a time: Tissue paper is an absorbent hygienic paper made of cellulose. At the beginning of the production process, the so-called headbox – the mixture that is introduced at the beginning – consists of more than 99 % water and less than 1 % cellulose.
By means of a sophisticated production process, it passes through various sections of the tissue machine, loses more and more moisture and thus reaches the Yankee cylinder (drying cylinder), the heart of the tissue production. The heat there is so great that the paper web is completely dry at the end. Directly after drying, the creping doctors are used. Depending on the angle, they crepe and add texture to the material more intensely or less intensely – this creates the desired feel.
