CERADIA® coater blades from Clouth Sprenger
Coated paper - analogue enjoyment
Despite digitalisation, paper is still an important part of our lives - not least because of digitalisation. Sounds paradoxical, but it is not. Paper speaks to the senses: We can touch, smell and even hear it, when we turn the pages of a magazine, for example. In many cases, paper also tells its own personal story. These are then moments of leisure and slowing down. Immensely important in a time that is largely characterised by acceleration.
There are basically two types of paper: Coated paper and uncoated paper (natural paper).
Compared to a natural paper, a coated paper has a much smoother surface, which ensures better printability. A binding agent is applied to smooth and finish the surface. Most of these are pigment coating colours. The so-called “coating” can be applied in different ways. Besides the doctor blade metering system, the coating blade is the most important and most frequently used metering element in paper finishing.
The coater blade - an important factor influencing paper quality
The quality of a coated paper depends on many factors. To achieve high paper qualities, the coating medium must be applied as evenly as possible. The function of the coater blade is comparable to that of a spatula when smoothing plastered walls.
The following application variants are possible:
- One-sided
- Both-sided
- Single
- Double
- Triple
Depending on requirements, surface effects ranging from matt to semi-matt to glossy can be created in the subsequent production process. For particularly high-quality papers, such as art paper, the paper is coated several times.
CERADIA® coater blades from Clouth Sprenger
Our CERADIA® coater blades are provided with a wear-resistant coating at the tip of the blade. Ceramic layers and metal-ceramic composites (cermets) are used for this.
Due to the coatings, the CERADIA® coater blades are significantly more durable than classic steel coater blades and ensure optimal application and maximised system availability. The other big benefit is better paper quality for longer periods. Because low wear rate of the ceramic and cermet blades, means more consistent paper quality.
We carry out all manufacturing processes for our coater blades ourselves without exception, which enables us to adapt our products optimally to customer-specific process requirements. This applies, for example, to the optimised shape of the working surface at the blade tip and the condition of the applied wear protection layer. Manufacturing from a single source also gives us the advantage of being able to react quickly and specifically to changes in customer requirements.
